The Queen in Exile

When the assassins of the rat queen fail, she is forced to flee her home and establish a new settlement. To do this, she must climb to the top from the very beginning and get her hands dirty with hard work. Digging into the ground for resources, gathering food, chopping down trees, and preparing everything for the influx of refugees from all over the area.

At the same time, the player controls not only the colony, but also the queen herself, who can give orders, engage in reconnaissance, help with construction, and even lead her subjects into battle.

The most important building, available right away, is the entrance to the city, where settlers will arrive every day. And since the inhabitants are not only the heart of the city, but also a cheap labour force, the queen must choose very carefully. After all, the rat dwellers are very different.

Some like to spend money, introverts are less likely to need entertainment, and pacifists do not want to fight. There are those who dislike the leader or hate paying taxes (such people should be sent away immediately), and sometimes there are slobs or opponents of beds. In addition to their character traits, each rat has their own characteristics that help them master a particular profession more quickly. Strong settlers can be sent to the smithy, dexterous ones to perform in the theatre, and intelligent ones to the science lab.

After inviting each rat dweller to the city, you can rename them. I took advantage of this and named the settlers after my friends and acquaintances according to their character traits. I immediately felt a sense of responsibility, because now they are not just future taxpayers, but almost like family! And just think of all the funny stories you can tell later! After all, rat dwellers are not just puppets at the machines. Each has their own schedule and tasks, life difficulties, personal conflicts, satisfaction parameters and quests. Of course, they won’t want to try excrement, as in Cult of the Lamb, but there will be plenty of requests.

At a low difficulty level (perfect for beginners to master the mechanics, survive the first year, and understand the technology tree), Ratopia is quite loyal to the player. You can explore and build optional buildings, spend time on decor and symmetry, travel, and not worry too much about a strict sequence of actions.

This is already better than in Oxygen Not Included, where even on the first difficulty level, you’ll be beset with problems almost from the start. Yes, over time, problems will invade Ratopia: zombie rat raids, locusts, floods or frosts, but at least the game will warn you about upcoming problems.

The road to Ratopia

The first inhabitants don’t need much: they can sleep on the floor, eat wheat or raw meat for dinner, and their only entertainment will be a sad rat in a circus. But the leader’s curiosity is the engine of progress, so over time, the colony will be filled with innovations. A sawmill and other machines for processing resources will appear in Ratopia, and immediately after that, there will be a need for new workers. The colony will begin to grow gradually, as will the demands of its inhabitants. You will have to take care of comfort, hygiene, tasty food, and new entertainment.
